PERTUSSIS (WHOOPING COUGH)

Increasing Pertussis Activity in Vancouver Coastal Health Region

Pertussis is a very serious, contagious illness.  Getting vaccine protects you, your family, and those you care for.  Free pertussis vaccine (Adacel or TdaP) is now available for the following people who have not had a pertussis shot in the last five (5) years:

  • All pregnant women and their partners

  • Everyone in contact with babies 18 months of age and younger

  • All Aboriginal people.

The Health authorities have advised that the most important preventions are: 

  • Wash your hands often with warm, soapy water
  • Avoid touching your nose, eyes, and mouth
  • Practise proper cough/sneeze etiquette
  • Stay home from school or work if you are ill.
