Dominican Republic Humanitarian Trip Fundraiser
Congratulations to everyone who participated in the fundraiser dinner on Friday, January 20th. What a team! Amazing parents and students who all came together to volunteer for a common goal. Everyone happily gave of their time and did so in such a professional way. It was a flawless event and tons of fun too raising $20,000 to put towards the cost of building supplies for the upcoming trip to the Dominican Republic. Way to go!!!
On Friday January 20th, local musician Barney Bentall will headline an evening fundraising event in support of the grade 11/12 humanitarian trip to the Dominican Republic this summer. In July 2012, 44 Seycove Secondary Community School students and their chaperones will be heading off on a 10-day humanitarian trip to the Sousa area of the Dominican Republic. The trip will see the students engage in building projects for the Haitian and Dominican communities and families. All monies raised through fundraising go directly towards the building supplies for the projects. Students taking part in this trip are supplementing their educational program in Social Justice 12, cultural tourism and/or global initiatives.
As ambassadors for their school, community and their country, the students will learn first hand the responsibilities and independence of self-governance, the communication and leadership skills necessary for teamwork, and the social skills necessary for a variety of circumstances. The trip is being coordinated by a not-for-profit group called Hero Holiday, providing students with a great balance between hard work, experiential learning, life-altering awareness, great memories, and a renewed passion to return home and affect change. All monies raised at this fundraising event go towards building materials and supplies needed for the group's projects in the Dominican Republic. Countless hours have been donated by students and parents through event organization and planning, selling of tickets, and collection of donations for the silent auction and raffles.
