Physical Education 8 / éducation physique 8
The main objective of this course is to provide an introduction to a variety of team and individual sports. Principles of fitness and nutrition will also be taught. Student participation is essential to success. Each student must attend regularly, demonstrate a willingness to learn, and put in a solid effort regardless of skill level. Students will be evaluated as follows: Effort and attitude (40%) Skill – relative to student potential (30%) Knowledge – written tests (20%) Fitness – test results (10%) *Supplementary fee: $10.00
Physical Education 9 / éducation physique 9 The basics learned in PE 8 are reinforced. Further development of fundamentals and game strategies are taught. In addition, new sports are introduced. There is further work in the area of Active Health, with a focus on fitness, nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. *Supplementary fee: $10.00
Physical Education 10 The fundamentals and strategies learned in PE 8 and 9 are reviewed, but more time is devoted to development in game play. There is further work in the area of Active Health, with a focus on fitness, nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. Students are introduced to new life-long physical activities. *Supplementary fee: $20.00
P.E. Boys Strength and Conditioning 11/12 This is an elective course designed to involve students in higher level fitness development. Students will develop and implement a strength & conditioning program to meet their own specific interests and goals. They will also gain an understanding of fitness theory, applied musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology, and nutrition. Classes are held both at Argyle and at the Karen Magnussen weight room. Transportation to and from classes is the responsibility of the student. Students are required to purchase a fitness pass from the North Vancouver Recreation Commission (at a reduced rate – approx. $20/month for 10 months). This pass can be used both during and outside of class time and for other regularly scheduled sessions offered through the NVRC (swimming, skating, fitness classes, squash, etc). Students can take this course multiple times and earn senior elective credits each year.
P.E. Girls Fitness 10/11/12 Students can take this class in grade 10 as an alternative to regular PE to obtain their grade 10 PE credits, and can take it again in grade 11 and 12 for senior elective credits each year. There is an emphasis on personal fitness and a healthy lifestyle. Classes will be held both at Argyle and at North Vancouver Recreation Commission sites. Transportation to and from classes is the responsibility of the student. Car pooling and public transportation are options (parent drivers are invited to participate in classes). Students are required to purchase a fitness pass from the North Vancouver Recreation Commission (at a reduced rate – approx. $20/month for 10 months). This pass can be used both during and outside of class time and for other regularly scheduled sessions offered through the NVRC (swimming, skating, fitness classes, yoga, etc).
Physical Education 11 Students will participate in a variety of traditional sports and activities. Students will also participate in a number of field trips (activities may include sailing, kayaking, golf, indoor rock climbing, river rafting etc.), as well as a camping trip. As well, students will have the opportunity to obtain the First on the Scene First Aid certification through St. John’s Ambulance. Students are required to complete a modest amount of service hours within the school and community. *Supplementary Fee: $65.00
Physical Education 12 This course is an extension of Physical Education 12. Students will take part in a number of the same activities, including a camping trip, along with some new activities. In addition, students will take on some leadership responsibilities in some of the classroom activities. As well, students will have the opportunity to obtain the First on the Scene First Aid certification through St. John’s Ambulance. Students are required to complete a modest amount of service hours within the school and community. *Supplementary Fee: $65.00
