French 8: French 8 emphasizes oral work with increasing time devoted to reading and writing as the year progresses. Although most students entering French 8 have had up to three years of exposure to French, this course is also open to beginning students. The course culminates in an oral and a written exam. Recommended: a good French-English dictionary for home use.

Français Langue 8: This course stresses the basic grammatical components of the French language and teaches simple and complex sentences and paragraph writing. Students study a short contemporary novel and short stories. Library skills are developed through a short research project. Recommended: a good French dictionary, a French-English Bilingual dictionary and a Bescherelle for home use. These can be purchased at retail book stores.

French 9: Vocabulary is related to shopping, school, sports, and travel. Students learn to express ideas in present, past and future; indicate possession; ask questions to seek information; and express themselves using positive and negative reactions. The course culminates in an oral and a written exam. Recommended: a good French-English dictionary. (For home use)

Français Langue 9: This course puts particular emphasis on and expands upon the grammatical components of the French language. It includes the study of the contemporary novel, short stories and poetry. Students are expected to be able to write a short and logical narrative.

French 10: This is a course which continues to develop new vocabulary and structures. The focus is on learning to express ideas in the past tense. Themes include food, travel, sports and leisure activities. Recommended: a good French-English dictionary. (For home use)

Français Langue 10: This course includes the study and analysis of a contemporary novel, and short stories. It puts emphasis on oral presentations such as exposés and interviews and requires students to be able to write a personal narrative and short analysis.

French 11: Emphasis is on learning to express ideas and opinions using several different verb tenses in combinations or sequences. Themes include city life, shopping, free time and meals. Reading skills are developed through the use of authentic documents providing an awareness of Francophone culture. Oral skills are developed through spontaneous conversations and discussions. Recommended: a good French-English dictionary.

Français Langue 11: This course deals with the literary analysis of a psychological novel and the study of a play and short stories. Students are introduced to planning and writing “une dissertation”.

French 12: Students develop their skills in written and oral expression by participating in spontaneous conversations and debate/discussion of topics of current interest. Themes include travel, work, ecology and health. Reading and comprehension skills are further emphasized with the reading of articles from magazines, newspapers, and short literary pieces, and the viewing of French films. A good French-English dictionary is required (for home use).

Français Langue 12: This course includes the study and analysis of a novel and comparative studies of different literary genres such as novels, plays and poetry. Particular emphasis is put on stylistics and dissertation writing.

Spanish 9: This first level course in Spanish introduces students to the Spanish speaking world. Students are expected to develop an appreciation for the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. This course culminates in an oral and a written exam. Recommended: a good Spanish-English dictionary.

Spanish 10: This course is a continuation of Spanish 9. Students are expected to build upon the basic language skills acquired in Spanish 9. More emphasis is placed on grammatical concepts and oral work. Recommended: a good Spanish-English dictionary.

Spanish 11: In this course, a thorough grounding is given in the spoken and written language. Students are expected to master the essentials of grammar and to be able to carry on a simple but correct conversation. The curriculum contains a balance of grammar, writing, reading and the spoken word. Recommended: a good Spanish-English Dictionary

Spanish 12:  This course offers students an excellent opportunity to develop a feeling for the idiom of the language in all aspects: conversation, literature, grammar and writing. Students are expected to participate in spontaneous conversations and debate topics of current interest.
