ART 8:  Art students will become familiar with the 5 elements of design through exercises and projects in drawing, painting, ceramic sculpture and printmaking. The focus will be on exploring artistic materials and mediums to develop ways of seeing and expressing themselves creatively.

ART 9/10: This is a general course which continues to offer students a wide range of artistic experiences. Skills and techniques introduced in Explore 8 will be developed and expanded in Art 9/10. New area includes portrait and figure drawing, clay/papier mache sculpture, printmaking, and gallery visits.

CERAMICS 9/10: In this course, students will be introduced to the basic ceramic materials and processes necessary to produce clay forms and the basic principles of 3D design to produce sculpture in a variety of materials. Clay methods will include hand-building with pinch, slab and coil techniques. Glazing and fi nishing techniques will be explored. More advanced study may be continued in Sculpture and Ceramics 11/12.

ART 11: In this course students become involved in a broad range of art activities at a more sophisticated level. Development of craftsmanship in the areas of drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture will be emphasized.

ART 12: This senior art course is designed to give students the opportunity for greater independence in developing artistic skills and in choosing specific areas of interest. After an initial review of materials, methods, image strategies, contexts, and the elements and principles of design, students will develop personal projects in the final terms. Art history research and sketchbook will be emphasized.

CERAMICS 11: In this course, students will be introduced to the basic ceramic materials and processes necessary to produce clay forms, and the basic principles of 3D design to produce sculpture in a variety of materials. Clay methods used will include hand-building with pinch, slab and coil techniques and throwing on the wheel. Glazing and finishing techniques will be explored.

CERAMICS 12: In this course, students will continue with processes and techniques learned in Ceramics 11. Clay methods used will include hand-building with pinch, slab and coil techniques and throwing on the wheel. Glazing and finishing techniques will be explored. Students will improve on learned skills and work independently to develop portfolio presentations and post-secondary applications.

DRAWING & PAINTING 11: This course focuses on the development of drawing and painting skills in a variety of media with an emphasis on image development, design and composition. Materials used will include collage and painting in watercolours, tempera and acrylics on canvas, drawing with pencil, conte, oil and chalk pastels and pen, ink and brush. Art history research and sketchbook work are key elements in this program.

DRAWING & PAINTING 12: This course focuses on the development of drawing and painting skills in a variety of media with an emphasis on image development, design and composition. Materials used will include collage and painting in watercolours, tempera and acrylics on canvas, drawing with pencil, conte, oil and chalk pastels and pen, ink and brush. Art history research and sketchbook work are key elements in this program. At this level, students will develop personal projects and a portfolio for post-secondary application.

ART AND DESIGN PORTFOLIO PREPARATION 12: This is a self-directed and project-based course requiring a hands-on approach in which the student manages their time and resources to prepare a body of work for application to post-secondary art or design institutions. The instructors are available to provide the students with individual guidance, resources and the curriculum necessary to produce balanced and comprehensive portfolio. The course will include career directions, researching art and design schools, new technique and skill building, portfolio development and packaging, and evaluation by peers and experts.
