ACCOUNTING 11 This course introduces the use of accounting principles, records, and debit and credit theory. As an introduction to bookkeeping procedures and accounting concepts, this course gives students practical exercises to become familiar with using fi nancial statements for a small business. You will gain experience using computer technology by using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and Simply Accounting. Also, during this course, you will learn how to successfully complete your own Canadian Income Tax return. Accounting is the backbone of commerce programs at all universities and colleges.
ART AND DIGITAL PORTFOLIO: This is a self-directed and project-based course requiring a hands-on approach in which the student manages their time and resources to prepare a body of work for application to post-secondary art or design institution. Instructors from Digital Media and Visual Arts are available to provide the students with individual guidance, resources, and the curriculum necessary to produce a balanced and comprehensive portfolio. The course will include career directions, researching art and design schools, new technique and skill building, portfolio development and packaging, and evaluation by peers and experts. This course allows time to prepare a sophisticated product to facilitate the students’ successful application to the art and design school of their choice.
BUSINESS EDUCATION 9/10: This course will introduce students to an overall perspective of different business areas such as Marketing, Finance, Economics, Entrepreneurship and Business Communications. With access to computers and the Internet, you will be able to learn and develop computer software skills that apply to all aspects of business. Project topics may include: fashion marketing, stock trading, business ventures, and product development. Activities you participate in will be interesting, relevant, and worthwhile.
DESIGN44 11 (DIGITAL MEDIA DEVELOPMENT): Design44 11 is a self-paced team focused course that introduces you to the world entrepreneurial spirit and client- based project work. This course suits students who have taken at least one digital media or writing 11/12 courses. Typically you will enjoy fast paced and challenging work in the “real” world of digital media and design. Upon completing this course you will be able to organize, plan, and complete a digital media project from beginning to end. This course will provide you with tangible products that will add to your resume and get you meaningful work or entry into college or university. Students may work on projects such as: Posters, Magazines, DVD movies/documentaries, web sites, and short films. Students will be exposed to various styles of design & digital media and will become strongly grounded in the elements and principles of design and storytelling as well as industry standard hardware and design software.
DESIGN44 12 (DIGITAL MEDIA DEVELOPMENT): Design44 12 is a self-paced team focused course that introduces you to the world entrepreneurial spirit and client-based project work. Students will take on leadership and mentorship roles. This course suits students who have desire to take on a leadership or specialist role within the team.
FILM & TELEVISION 11: Broadcasting 11 is a self paced course that introduces the fundamentals of script writing, cameras and lighting, and the art and science of short fi lm and documentary production. Recording and sharing community life is both fun and important work that involves a creative decision-making process. Getting you prepared to recognize, write, videotape and edit great stories is what this course is about. This course suits students who enjoy storytelling, Art, broadcast journalism and creating short fi lms. Upon completing this course you will be able to use: Premiere Pro to edit your movies, the latest digital video cameras, your knowledge of the principles of TV and film production with plenty of hands on experience. Ultimately you will create meaningful short fi lms. Broadcasting will prepare you for a future in TV Journalism, film production and Art. You can work on projects such as: short films/documentaries, special effects, green screening, music videos and TV commercials. Movies and slide shows give you exposure to various styles of fi lm and TV production.
FILM & TELEVISION 12: Broadcasting 12 is a self paced course that further introduces, at an advanced level, the fundamentals of script writing, cameras and lighting and the art and science of short film and documentary production. You can work on projects such as: short fi lms/documentaries, special effects, green screening, music videos and TV commercials. Selfplanned and directed projects will be the many means of expression and evaluation.
FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING 12: Immerse in the real world of accounting, where business decisions affect the future of actual organizations. You will learn how to use accounting information to make business decisions. The financial accounting principles you learn in this course will be useful in your personal life and in whatever career you choose to pursue. This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn accounting in a business context to prepare, interpret, and make decisions based on fi nancial information.
GAME DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT 11: Students in North Vancouver are surrounded by one of the biggest game design centers in the world. This is a self-directed team-based course that requires students to be highly motivated. Game design is a team activity and leverages a multitude of communication and technical skills and knowledge. The course involves game concept development, game history and theory, modeling, animation, rigging, and the use of a game engine using specific programs and a scripting language. In this course, the students will work in teams and build assets and animations, and develop game levels and use scripting language. Students will learn the fundamental skills of Autodesk’s industry standard 3D software, Maya, Mudbox and Motionbuilder, to design and create video game art assets including custom props and characters. Students will learn to create skeletons for their models which conform to Source® game engine specifi cations. The Source engine has been used for the development of the games Half-Life, Counter Strike and Portal. Students will explore common pratices and toolsets for 3D level creation while working “hands on” with Valve’s professional Hammer editor. Upon completing this course you will be able to plan and organize for game design and development, model characters and environments, rig and intergrate animations into the Source engine environment, and create an interactive game experience.

AME DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT 12: Students will develop a more in-depth knowledge of game design and development and they are expected to develop a deeper and rich game experience that is an extension of what has been learned from the game level produced in the grade 11 course. Students will propose a unique game design, pitch the idea, develop a game design document and plan and implement this plan with the expected milestones. Students will maintain a learning log and will review their work with online rubrics.
GRAPHIC DESIGN 11: Graphic Design 11 is a self-paced course that introduces you to the world of design. This course suits students who enjoy design, Art, cartooning, illustrating and writing. Upon completing this course you will be able to organize, plan and complete a design, digital art piece, or a graphic novel/cartoon. Graphic design is a great foundation course that will help prepare you for Design or Art College. Students can choose one of 3 possible streams: Commercial Design; Digital Art, or Graphic Novel and Children’s Books. Students can work on projects such as: Posters, CD covers, book covers, Web sites, package design, mixed-media digital art, graphic novels and children’s books. Students will be exposed to various styles of design and digital art and will become strongly grounded in the elements and principles of design as well as industry standard hardware and design software.
GRAPHIC DESIGN 12: Graphic Design 12 is a self-paced, project-based course that takes you further into the world of design. This course suit students who enjoy design, Art, cartooning, illustrating and writing. Upon completing this course you will be able to organize, plan and complete a design, digital art piece, or a graphic novel/cartoon. Graphic Design 12 is a great way to develop portfolio material for entrance into a Design or Art College. Approximately 30% of the course will involve advanced design concepts and tool learning and about 70% of the course will be independent or team related projects. Student developed design projects are strongly encouraged. Experimentation and exploration of new digital/traditional techniques and ideas will be stressed.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY 9/10: In this first course in the Digital Media and Business Education program, you will have the opportunity to develop skills and produce original work in graphic, animation, web, and business computer applications. You will practice proper keyboarding techniques and increase your keyboarding speed. Projects will include a major Dreamweaver website complete with a Flash introduction and Fireworks navigation bar; animations of cartoon characters and backgrounds using Flash; correcting, retouching, and adding special effects to digital photos in Photoshop; and creating vector drawings in Illustrator. You will be evaluated primarily with completed projects and assignments. This course will serve as an excellent introduction to using computers and industry-standard software applications.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY 11: Information Technology 11 is a general computer course that serves as an excellent introduction to applications used in more specific courses offered at the senior level, such as Animation, Digital Photography, Graphic Design, Web Design, Film & Television, and Desktop Publishing. Topics include graphical programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign; animation using Adobe Flash;web publishing using Adobe Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Flash; video editing using Adobe Premiere; business programs such as Microsoft Excel. Students will be evaluated primarily by completing a major project for each unit as well as lesson work and quizzes. If you enjoy a friendly, hands-on environment while developing computer skills for life, work, and self-expression, this is the course for you!
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY 12: Information Technology 12 students will continue the topics covered in Info Tech 11 and extend their depth. They will continue the programming unit in Javascript and Flashaction scripting to create interactivity in websites. New topics will include sound editing for music and/or special effects, and video editing. Students will have access to drawing tablets and digital cameras.
JOURNALISM TOP PUBLISHING 11: This course focuses on combining writing skills and computer applications to make printed materials more attractive and readable. You will become profi cient at using Adobe InDesign for page layout, Photoshop for photo correction and enhancement, and Illustrator for creating graphical elements. You will have a choice between taking a journalistic or creative writing approach, and you will further develop your writing skills in that area. You will produce either a 12-page magazine complete with original articles, or a short graphic novel, both of which will be printed in colour. Evaluation will be based on project work and lessons.
JOURNALISM AND DESKTOP PUBLISHING 12: A project-based course focusing on reinforcing and making connections between desktop publishing concepts, software proficiency, and creating documents that are meaningful and well written. Topics covered will include design theory and typography. Students will have input into developing meaningful projects.
MARKETING 11: The focus of this course is to understand the fundamentals of retail and consumer marketing. Leading edge techniques such as product, distribution, marketing communication and pricing strategies will be explored. The way in which companies produce, advertise and distribute products is ever changing and as a result the techniques and brands that are discussed are changed on a yearly basis. In this course, you will produce a commercial, conduct relevant market research, work in groups to analyze business decisions and develop and execute a marketing plan for a product using a real life situation. Marketing is the fastest growing sector of job opportunities and this course will help you to become the next Apprentice.
MARKETING 12: This course explores a deeper understanding of the issues relating to a global marketplace. Some of the topics covered will include Ethics and Advertising, E-Commerce, Sport and Entertainment Marketing, Consumer Buying Behaviour, Business and the OlympicGames and Event Planning. Class discussions may include socially responsible marketing practises, the evolution of products and gender roles/ethical advertising practises. This course is beneficial to anyone interested in running their own business and/or pursuing marketing, business administration or commerce programs in the future.
PHOTOGRAPHY AND DIGITAL IMAGING 11: Photography 11 is a self paced course that introduces the fundamentals of digital cameras and the art of viewing and capturing the world more carefully. Photography is simply great fun, but it is not just about pointing and pressing a button; it’s a creative decision-making process. Getting you prepared to see and capture great photographs is what this course is about. This course suits students who enjoy storytelling, Art, Photojournalism, and creating with pictures. Upon completing this course you will be able to use: Photoshop CS2 to improve, modify, and edit your photos; latest digital cameras; your knowledge of the elements and principles of photo composition with plenty of hands on experience. Ultimately you will create many stunning images. Photography will prepare you for a future in Journalism, Graphic Design, and Art. You can work on projects such as: Photo essays, photojournalism, T-shirt designs, collages, portraiture, and night photography. Movies and slide shows give you exposure to various styles of photography, such as Fashion, Photojournalism, and Art.
PHOTOGRAPHY AND DIGITAL IMAGING 12: Photography 12 is a self-paced course that introduces students, at a higher level, to digital SLR cameras and the art of viewing and capturing the world more carefully. You will learn to do fashion, portrait, and art photography with professional lights, equipment, and backgrounds. This course suits students who have a deeper interest in photography and Art and want to work with their camera at an intermediate level or higher. Upon completing this course you will be able to use: a Digital SLR camera to create powerful studio photographs as well as composing photos in the areas of close-up, street, photo-journalism and landscape photography. Ultimately you will create many stunning images. Photography will prepare you for a future in Journalism, Graphic Design, and Art. Approximately 30% of the course will involve advanced photocomposition and design concepts, lighting, and tool learning beyond Photography and Digital Imaging 11. About 70% of the course is project-based.
SOUND RECORDING AND DESIGN 11: Sound Recording and Design is a self-paced course that introduces students to a balance of the technical, artistic and human skills required to develop an awareness of the recording and sound design industry. Recording music, special effects, soundscapes, and voiceovers and sounds for movies and animations is both fun and important work that involves a creative and technical decision-making process. Getting you prepared to plan, organize, create, record, and mix high quality sound is what this course is about. This course suits students who enjoy music, sound recording and mixing, sound effects, and animation and fi lm production. Upon completing this course you will be able to use: Cubase to record and edit your sound, use industry standard microphones and digital interfaces; your knowledge of the principles and craft of sound recording and sound design with plenty of hands-on experience. Ultimately you will create meaningful sound recordings that can be used for music, fi lm, animation or radio productions. Sound Recording and Design will prepare you for a future in Sound Recording, TV production, Film production and animation. You can work on projects such as: music production, sound effects, voiceovers, nature recording and sound for fi lm and animation.

Approximately 30% of the course will involve advanced sound design and tool learning and 70% of the course will be independent or team-related projects. Student-developed design projects are strongly encouraged. Experimentation and exploration of sound recording and design techniques and ideas will be stressed.
WEB DESIGN 11: In this course you will become profi cient at using the Adobe family of tools for website development: Dreamweaver for managing files, Fireworks for creating the graphical layout and adding user interactivity,and Flash for adding animated content. You will become familiar with and use web design concepts such as design, colour theory, typography, user navigation, and effective use of space. Some students will do projects for real clients. You will work in a friendly, hands-on environment, and you will be graded on lesson and project work.
WEB DESIGN 12: A project based course focussing on reinforcing and making connections between concepts of the art of Web design, software profi ciency, and developing design solutions. Approximately 30% of the course will involve advanced design concepts and tool learning beyond Web Design 11. Focus will be more on client-based design projects for the “real world”. About 70% of the course will be independent or team related projects.
YEARBOOK 11/12: Yearbook is a four-credit course that focuses on the development and production of the school annual. This is a project-based course that requires a high level of responsibility and reliability. For entrance into this course you must apply directly to the instructor.
3D ANIMATION: Animation is a self-paced course that introduces you to the exciting and creative world of visual storytelling in the tradition of Disney, Pixar, and quality Japanese anime. This course suit students who enjoy animation, sketching/painting and storytelling. Upon completing this course you will be able to plan and organize a script and storyboard and use animation principles to create a short, animated story. Animation and visual storytelling skills will prepare you for a future in script writing, animation, graphic design, and game design. Students can work on projects such as: short animated stories, special effects, characters for game design, game environment design and abstract animations. Students will be exposed to various styles of animation and storytelling and industry-level animation tools and principles and skills. Students will learn the fundamental skills of Autodesk’s industry standard 3D software, Maya, Mudbox and Motionbuilder, to design and create models and animations. Highly motivated students will be allowed to explore game design.
3D ANIMATION 12: Animation 12 is a self-paced, project-based course focusing on reinforcing and further mastering and making connections between concepts of animation and design, software profi ciency and storytelling. Approximately 30% of the course will cover, beyond Animation 11, animation principles and software learning. About 70% of the course will be independent or team-related projects.
