The elementary band and strings teachers developed a district band and strings curriculum and a criterion referenced report card in 1997. The curriculum describes the goals of the curriculum followed in the Elementary band and Strings program. The program was designed to develop a range of instrumental music skills and compliments the Ministry of Education's music curriculum.

Students usually enter the program in grade 4 (strings) or grade 5 (band) and continue through to grade 7.

The abilities and knowledge they acquire over the three or four years spent in the program include music skills, executive or instrumental playing skills, music theory and ensemble skills.
