Internet Access From Schools

As North Vancouver School District is part of the Provincial Learning Network (PLNet) we are also part of site blocking and filtering process. The following is a brief outline of what is being blocked for all North Vancouver public schools.

PLNet users attempting to access websites on the Internet are subject to content filtering as a result of Government of BC Appropriate Use Guidelines. Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) Network Services, as the network manager, is currently blocking 38,000 inappropriate sites in the following categories: pornography, sexuality and adult sites.

This number continues to grow daily and is augmented by both a commercial site content subscription service and through the use of keyword searches on HTTP (Web) traffic.

In addition, ITSD Network Services has implemented a warning service which presents users who try to access known inappropriate sites with a "redflag" screen on their browser.

The redflag service logs which IP address the inappropriate request came from. In the case of PLNet, if ITSD Security encountered a potential abuser scenario, the information would be forwarded to the Ministry PLNet Security Coordinator for action.
