Dear Parents,                            September, 2009

Welcome to division 9, a straight grade 2 class.  Lise Smith will be teaching  from Monday to Thursday and Cindy Donaldson will be teaching on Fridays.  We are very excited to be working together and have planned lots of interesting activities for your children.

The students will be responsible for remembering an agenda every day.  Any homework assignments or notes from us will be recorded in the agenda, so please check it daily.  You can also use it to write short notes to us.  It’s a valuable way to communicate and we appreciate your help.

Homework will include daily reading, spelling practice and finishing special assignments.  We believe in family time and feel that the students work very hard at school, so homework will be limited.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding homework, please feel free to come and talk to us about it.

Every Monday, there will be a pre-test in spelling, which is done in the agendas.  Throughout the week students complete work related to the spelling pattern and there is a test on Fridays.

Every Friday, a letter will come home from your child to you.  We would like you to respond in writing to the letter and return it to school on Monday.  We believe this authentic writing assignment is a valuable way to communicate, and improve the students' writing abilities.

In this classroom we strive to create a community of learners that is responsible and respectful.  We have 4 agreements that we will be discussing in depth with the students.  These agreements include mutual respect, attentive listening, right to pass/participate, and appreciation/no put-downs.  We expect students to follow these basic agreements at all times.  We encourage cooperation and collaboration.  We believe that students learn best when they can discuss their ideas with others.  We try to get the students moving and involved whenever possible.  We strive to include hands-on learning activities in our program.

We will be sending home Scholastic book order forms each month.  If you would like to purchase something, please return the completed forms with a cheque made out to Scholastic Canada.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at the school or by email at lsmith@nvsd44.bc.ca and cdonaldson@nvsd44.bc.ca.  We are really looking forward to a wonderful year with you and your children.

Yours truly, Lise Smith and Cindy Donaldson
