September Procedures
KINDERGARTEN PROCEDURES 2008/2009

Times
All Day Kindergarten times are 8:50 am – 3:00 pm
Children may come into the classroom after the 8:40 am bell.
Dismissal will be at the Kindergarten classroom door. I will match each child with his/her parent or caregiver.  Please inform us if someone different will be picking up your child after school.

Absences
You will need to let the school know if your child will be absent. Please call the office at 604-903-3370.  You may leave a message with the absence reason 24 hours a day.

Supplies
-    Basic Classroom Supplies (available through the school from Teaching Things for $8.65) or self purchase.  The Supply List  is attached.
-    $15.00 Craft/Consumables Supplies to be paid by cheque or cash to Capilano Elementary School.  This will be used for projects and a variety of communal supplies such as crayons, playdoh, felts, pastels, paint, seeds, soil, glitter, cooking and other craft supplies)
-    Backpack or school bag…large enough to transport library books, snack and lunch
-    Runners – slip-on or Velcro please, for Gym and inside use when boots are worn to school
-    Cloth bag to store runners and clothing for “emergencies” to be hung on the cloakroom hook

Snacks/Lunches
At school we will be discussing healthy food choices and care of teeth. Since the children will not be brushing their teeth at school we as you to avoid foods such as raisins, dried fruits, fruit drinks, candy, cookies and other sweets that cause plaque build-up.  Cups and tap water are available in the classroom at any time.
Please provide a daily nutritional snack (even if your child says he/she doesn’t need one).  Fruits, raw vegetables, cheese and crackers are all great choices.  At this point I believe that are nuts are also an option.  I will let you know if there are any food allergies are present in the class.
Mrs. Montgomery will be supervising the children during the the outdoor play time and lunch during the noon hour.
Unfortunately we do not have the facilities to heat foods for lunches.  Children may bring a thermos and variety of foods to enjoy at the lunch break.  They will be asked to eat their own lunch however on occasion we may share if someone is extra hungry!

Clothing
We will be playing outdoors every day - rain or shine!  Children require appropriate clothing - boots and a hooded rain-proof coat are necessities. Please label all outer clothing…jackets, packs, boots, runners and your child’s cloth bag so that any lost items are easily returned.  Children may need to have an extra pair of underwear, socks and pants for emergencies or rainy day problems.  These may be stored in the cloth bag.

Indoor clothing should be comfortable and easily washable so that children are free to enjoy such activities as exercising and painting.  Should paint get on clothing I have found that cold water generally removes it.

Safety
Children are expected to stay in the classroom and must first check with the teacher before going into the hallway or the classroom bathroom.
When the class leaves the room, children are expected to stay with the group.
Parents and caregivers will pick-up youngsters at the classroom door upon dismissal and must inform the school if the child is going home with someone else.

Library
The children will be making weekly Library visits for a story time, literary activities and book exchanges with Ms Wilson. Our Library time is on Thursday morning.  There is a bucket for returned library books near the Kindergarten door.

Parent Volunteers
You may wish to assist or observe in the classroom, or help out, for special outings or share a special skill with the children.  This would be greatly appreciated but first the children need to feel comfortable in their new Kindergarten surroundings.   I will put up a Volunteer Calendar in October.
School volunteers are required to register at the school office prior to working with the children.

Birthdays/Celebrations
Sometimes families would like to bring in a treat on a birthday or special holiday.  This is an option, but please let me know in advance. On or just after a child’s birthday we sing a special birthday song in the classroom and the birthday child visits Mr. Marshall in the principal’s office to receive a special birthday pencil and hand stamp.
Please do not hand out birthday or other party invitations at school unless all children are invited (which I wouldn’t recommend!)  It is very hurtful for children and parents to see others receive invitations and hear talk about parties in which they haven’t been included.

Homework
Daily reading aloud and talking with your child is the most valuable kind of homework you can do.
Some families also like a daily homework time with assigned activities while others are very busy with music lessons, sports activities or family obligations.  Educators and parents do not all agree on the value  of homework. However, in the past I have provided monthly homework calendars of quick, easy activities which some parents find useful for seeing how their children are gaining new skills in Kindergarten. These are for your use only and do not have to be returnd to school.
In October children will begin a home reading programme using leveled books which requires about five to ten minutes of adult assisted reading per day.

Thank you!
It is important the parents and teachers communicate on a regular basis, please see me before or after class if you have any questions.  My cell number is 778-839-9993….just leave me a message and I will return your call. I hope that you and your child have a wonderful Kindergarten year!

Sincerely,
