English 9/ 11/12 Course Expectations

Teacher: MR. RAIBLE ROOM: 225

1. Readings: Five Genres: Short Fiction, Novels, Plays, Poetry, Essays/Grammar
-Nightly readings need to be completed to facilitate discussions.
-Depending on the length of the reading, a selection should be read several times to glean the writer's more subtle intentions.
-Read authors' biographies and historical texts on the times in which they wrote to illuminate the meaning of the work (consult your local or school library).
-The specific selections should be accompanied by the student's own notes on meaning, main idea, and stylistic devices, before the discussion questions are attempted.
-English 12’s should use the government provincial examination web site extensively.

2. Essays and Tests/Homework:
-The written portion of the course will count for 80 % of each term and will be comprised of literary essays, literary paragraphs, and personal essays.
-Examinations on each unit will be tested using the literary essay and paragraph format, as well as some multiple choice/true-false questions.

3. Projects:
-Creative projects consisting of oral readings, dramatic presentations, art and music presentations, etc. will comprise 20% of the course.

4. Discussions:
-Literature classes generally consist of stimulating and opinionated discussions that can be facilitated in small groups or in a class grouping. Be prepared to argue up a storm and support your opinions.

5. Attendance/Behavior/Assignments/Equipment

-Be on time.
-Behave respectfully
-Be prepared to work hard and have fun.
-Bring all your own equipment (text, notebook, pens.) No borrowing or lending.
-Bring one binder: 200-500 pages
-Late major assignments = 10% per day (includes weekends and holidays)
-Late homework assignments = 0 (no excuses)
-Legitimately Absent for test/quiz/assignment - write an alternate test/quiz/assignment the next class.
-Away on family holiday when assignment due or test given -No problemo if given previous notification.
-No food or drink in class
-No I-pods, other musical devices, no cells, no pagers.

6.Evaluation:
-Course mark - En 12 = 60%/Provincial Examination = 40%/
-Course mark – En 9/11 = 80%/Final Examination = 20%
-Each term weighted equally.
-No bumping of marks for OSI, University Entrance, Honor Roll, etc. - "What you gets is what you earns."
-Plagiarizing or cheating will not be tolerated. You will be severely penalized. See the department policy in your course outline.
