What is reading fluency and why improve it?

Reading Fluency is the ability to read text quickly, accurately, and with proper expression. Fluency improves comprehension, which is the goal of reading.

What can you do at home to improve this skill?

1.) Choose a passage at the appropriate level (18-19 out of 20 words read correctly).

2.) Model by reading the passage fluently to the child.

3.) Guide. If the child reads the word incorrectly, pause to see if he/she will correct it. If the Child doesn't correct it, give no more then two prompts. IE: "Sound it out", "Break it up into parts", "Does it make sense?"

4.) Repeat. Have the child reread the passage many times, until the passage is fluent.

Having the child read orally allows you to give them feedback, and gives them a chance to hear how well they are reading too!
