Question:  I have created a section but it is not showing on my website.  What's wrong?
Answer:  The section has probably not been published.  Under the Review tab, click Finish Editing>Publish

Question:  I have published a Sitecore section, but the content still does not show on my website.  Why is this happening and what should I do?
Answer:  The page may have been created as a 'No left menu' page.  Such pages by default do not appear unless they are linked to.  When creating a new page, choose the top option in the list.  The options below it are meant to be used in very specific situations.

Question:  I have deleted a page but the page is still on my site.  How do I get rid of it?
Answer:  Select the main 'parent' section and under the Review tab, click Edit>Finish Editing>Publish All

Question:  To use SiteCore on a Mac, what web browser is recommended?
Answer:  FireFox is the only web browser that can be used on a Mac for Sitecore.

Question:  Are there differences between using Firefox and Internet Explorer for Sitecore?           Answer:  Generally, Firefox works well.  However, it does have some idiosyncrasies - please see below:

  • In the editor, some windows come up behind the editor window.  This applies to the InsertSitecoreLink and InsertSitecoreMedia windows.  The editor window must be resized or moved to see the window behind it.
  • In the Media Library, there are no scroll buttons.  To scroll use the down/up arrows on the keyboard.
  • Firefox does not handle pasting from Word that well.  If Word formatting is to be retained, there will be a better result using Internet Explorer on a PC.

Question:  Sometimes, when a Sitecore command is clicked,  nothing seems to happen.  Why is this?
Answer:  SiteCore is a web-based program.  When clicking on a button or a link, be prepared to wait for a short time while the program contacts the server to respond to the request.  Avoid clicking multiple times - occasionally the internet may be slow.

Question:  I click the plus sign beside an item in the navigation area, but the item's 'children' do not appear.  What should I do?
Answer:  On a Mac, ensure Sitecore is using Firefox as the web browser.   If an approved browser is being used,  close the last  plus sign that worked, then open it again.  This should refresh the screen.

Question:
Are clicks single clicks or are double clicks used in Sitecore?
Answer:  Use single clicks in Sitecore.

Question:  Can I use Internet Explorer's 'Back' button while in Sitecore?
Answer:  No, Sitecore is a program within a program.  Use the Sitecore commands, not the Internet Explorer commands.

Question:  Are single clicks or are double clicks used in Sitecore?
Answer:  Use single clicks in Sitecore.

Question:  When editing a Sitecore document sometimes the alignment of text or an image is changed however the areas below change too.  How do I prevent this?
Answer:  Locate the cursor just to the right of the text or image, then press the New Paragraph icon.   This will create a separation so that different choices of alignment can be made.

Question:  How do you do a right click on a Mac?
Answer:  Click while holding down the Control key on the Mac keyboard.

Question:  What are the steps used to create a new Sitecore document?
Answer:  Select the section under which the new document is to go, right click on the section then click on New>Staff_Document, name the new document and click OK.

Question:  What are the steps used to update an existing Sitecore document?
Answer:  Quick Guide to process editing.

Question:  When I attempt to enter content in a section, nothing happens.  Why?
Answer:  Click the edit command.  (The edit command is under the Review tab.)

Question:  I have edited and saved a document, but the updates don't appear on the web site.  Why?
Answer:  The document must be published before the web site is updated.

Question:  I have edited, saved, and published a document, but I still don't see the changes on the web site.  How come?
Answer:  Click the refresh button in the Internet Explorer window.  The changes should appear.

Question:  What size of image is recommended for Sitecore?
Answer:  The width/height of an image should be about 400 pixels or less.  (Absolute maximum - less than 580 pixels.)  The file size of an image should be about 40 kb or less.

Question:  What is the maximum size of a movie to be used in Sitecore?
Answer:  A movie should not be larger than 10 mb but preferrably 4 - 6 mb because of available disk space.

Question:  The link area on the left of my Sitecore page is not showing correctly.  (It is too narrow and the active link is displaying below the arrow image.)  What is happening?
Answer:  Any image or table in the working area of a Sitecore section must be less than 580 pixels wide.  If an image or table is bigger than this it will infringe on the link area and the link area will not display correctly.

Question:  What is the recommended size of file for an image to be displayed in Sitecore?
Answer:  An image file size should not be larger than 2 mb.  Whenever possible, file sizes should be minimized.  A photo from a camera may satisfy the 2 mb limit, but it should not be uploaded directly to the media library.  Before it is uploaded it should be resized and optimized so that it displays correctly, loads quickly, and uses a minimum amount of Media Library storage space.  A program such as Irfanview or iPhoto can easily resize images.  (Click here for web ready document.)

Question:  Can I make my own folders in my area of the SiteCore media library?
Answer:  Yes, right click on the folder that is to contain the new one and select Insert> Media Folder

Question: I created a section and then dragged it to a new area of my site and now it is not working correctly.  Why?
Answer:  Pages that were created at the section level can only exist at that level.  As soon as it is moved to a different level eg sub-section, the page will no longer function correctly.  To solve this problem, copy the content from the original section, create a new section at the appropriate level and paste the content.

Question:  I wish to work on a section of our school's site, but I don't see an edit option.  What should I do?
Answer:  There are two things to check here.

First:  Do you have privileges for this part of the school site?  If in doubt, see the Administrator of the school site.

Next:  It may be that someone else has privileges for this section and is in the process of editing it.  If so, their name will appear at the top of the section under the title.  Contact the person and ask them to publish the section as soon as they are finished with it.  When the page has been published it will be available for editing.   In the example below, the 'English' page is unavailable for editing because 'HowellO' has locked it.

Question:  Can students and parents edit Sitecore pages?
Answer:  Students and parents can edit Sitecore pages however they cannot publish them.  Instead, they click a Submit option and the site Administrator has available an Approve option that is equivalent to publishing.  Important note:  For students and parents to edit a page, the page must have been created as a Student Document.  Also, the parent or student must have been given privileges for the page.

Question:  Can a Student Document exist at the section level.
Answer:  No, a Student Document can only be created below the section level.

Question:
Do students and parents need to be assigned privileges to the the Media Library?
Answer:  If the student or parent is going to be working with images, pdf files, and so on, they will need to be assigned privileges for the relevant part of the Media Library.
