Capilano Elementary School

It Takes A Village : Capilano parents Dani and Jennifer are two of many Capilano parents who are supporting Capilano students' and teachers' earth friendly habits.

Some Capilano student, teacher and parent earth-friendly successes include:

Waste reduction: Hot Lunch Coordinators have chosen specific food vendors who provide recyclable containers; parent volunteers sort non-Blue box recyclable hot lunch waste and send it to the Pacific Mobile Depot and Encorp; parents send utensils and napkins on hot lunch days (most of the time!).

Curbside Recycling: Capilano remains one of the few public schools in NV that collects curbside recycling in the hallways. Thanks to our grade 5 classes for transferring it to the curb each week!

Gardening: Donations from past grade 7 grad classes and PAC have helped established a student garden. This provides a hands-on opportunity for a Kindergarten and Grade 1 class to sow their own seeds.

Party Supplies: PAC purchased re-usable cups, plates and beverage containers for use by classes during their parties. No juice boxes required!

Student Action Projects with an Impact: Last year grade 3 students demonstrated their inquiry and reflective skills as they explored the topic of juice boxes. In they end they challenged other students to reduce or eliminate juice boxes from Capilano.

TAP Bottles
10/4/2011 8:44:00 AM

We are a group of Grade 10 students from Carson Graham Secondary, trying to make a difference in the world. Our mission is to eliminate plastic bottles from both our school, and the school district.

Last year, we decided that we wanted to make a positive environmental change in the world. We heard from our counsellor about a girl named Jennifer Hao, who was and still is trying to get rid of plastic bottles from her school in Burnaby. We decided to try to do the same. We have participated in Justice High, a series of workshops about the UN Millenium development goals. We have also presented for the Vancouver Chapter of Surfrider, and we have done some presentations in our school. We are planning on presenting to elementary school students this year, and also, we are planning a BBQ against Bottles in the near future. We are selling stainless steel, BPA free water bottles to support our cause and replace plastic bottles.
We hope that our organization will continue to grow, and we will reach our goal.

Wind Energy in Canada
9/26/2011 8:29:00 AM

High school physics teachers:

A free public lecture intended for high school physics teachers will be
given on Tuesday 4 October, 4:30 p.m. at the Univ. of British Columbia by
Prof. Peter Taylor. (This talk was postponed from June 10 due to conflict
with the Stanley Cup final.)

The purpose of the lecture is to introduce high school physics teachers
to a new video on wind energy for use in Canadian high schools, as there
is now great interest in wind energy as an alternative to fossil fuels.

Click here for more info on "Wind Energy in Canada; the basics, the resource and the opportunity" -
an educational video plus a talk.

Many thanks.

Lynn Valley Ecology Centre
9/14/2011 8:51:00 AM

Fall is Here! Bugs, Slugs and Teacher Outreach

It’s fall, and that means that the kids are back in school, the leaves are beginning to change color, and the recyclers are working hard in our forests and gardens. We’re talking about the tiny recyclers that help make our soil: animals like slugs, woodbugs, and worms. These animals are very important to forest and garden ecosystems.

If your kindergarten to Grade 2 class would like to learn more about these hard-working critters, the Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre offers in class programs for primary students on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons. Through a story, song and a visit with an invertebrate puppet and live creatures, Ecology Centre staff introduce students to some of the smallest and slimiest residents of the temperate rainforest.

The Ecology Centre also offers custom professional development programs for your staff. North Vancouver is lucky to have an abundance of green and growing things around our schools. If your staff would like to learn more about the plants and animals that live in stream, forest, and garden habitats around your school, staff from the Ecology Centre are available to visit with you after school or on professional development days.

For more information about the Ecology Centre’s program schedule, costs, and booking, visit this website  or call 604-990-3755.

City Shaping
6/27/2011 8:05:00 AM

The City of North Vancouver has now launched

CityShaping – Let’s Talk About Our Future!

We want to establish an ongoing dialogue with the community to hear what our community members have to say about the future of the City. Please help spread the word about the many opportunities for input. This input will contribute to update of our Official Community Plan (OCP) which provides the vision, goals and overarching direction to every policy, project and program the City pursues.

Please join the conversation by visiting the website, trying out the discussion forum, filling out a survey (there’s a prize!) and checking out one of our community events! We are hosting two events in July and will have a presence at a number of other events throughout the summer – like Party at the Pier in mid July.  The two kick-off events are as follows:

Event #1:          “Growing a More Sustainable Economy – How?”

5:00 to 9:00 PM, Friday July 22 – Shipbuilders Square

A drop-in event organized in collaboration with the Lower Lonsdale Business Association to gather ideas for the future of the local economy.

Event #2:          “Social Inclusion and Cultural Diversity – How?”

4:00 to 8:00 PM, Tuesday July 26 – John Braithwaite Community Centre

A drop-in event organized in collaboration with North Shore Neighbourhood House to gather ideas on living well together.

The CityShaping mini-site is linked directly from the City’s homepage.   For more information please contact Suzanne A. Smith, Planner, Community Development, City of North Vancouver, 604-990-4240, E-mail: ssmith@cnv.org

Lower Mainland Green Team Youth
6/24/2011 3:14:00 PM

'Lower Mainland Green Team - Youth' - a pilot project

The Lower Mainland Green Team (LMGT) is a volunteer group who remove invasive plants, plant trees/native plants, clean up and build/maintain trails in public green spaces. Based on interest, we are considering creating The Lower Mainland Green Team - Youth. The youth will plan, run and/or participate in a 3 hour stewardship event at a park/green space of their choice on a weekday during school hours. The LMGT organizer and leader will act as a facilitator and mentor to help youth run a successful event.

Some of the advantages of such a program:

Development of leadership and team building skills
Curriculum can be applied (e.g. calculating cubic meters of invasive plant removed, learning about plants and environmental issues parks face). The teacher will be responsible for the curriculum linkage.
Hands-on experiential education is very effective. The BC Ministry of Education encourages this kind of learning and published "Environmental Learning and Experience: An interdisciplinary Guide for Teachers"
Students are required to fulfill volunteer hours. This project could count towards that.
Local green spaces will be stewarded and conserved.

For more information please visit The Lower Mainland Green Team If interested in participating in this pilot project please contact Lyda at lowermainlandgreenteam@gmail.com

Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup
4/14/2011 2:55:00 PM
The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup (GCSC) presented by Loblaw Companies Limited, is pleased to announce a new learning opportunity for the students in your school. We present to you our first ever spring cleanup in addition to our National cleanup week, September 17-25, 2011.The GCSC - BC Spring School Edition takes place from May 1-31, 2011 and registration is now open at shorelinecleanup.ca.

A new Curriculum Guide has been developed just for BC schools to extend the learning experiences of students before and after a shoreline cleanup. It offers lesson plans for Grades K-7 in science, mathematics and social studies – all supporting the Prescribed Learning Outcomes of the BC Ministry of Education’s Integrated Resource Packages (IRPs).

Access the free Curriculum Guide online at shorelinecleanup.ca/schools .

Why participate in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup this May?Ê

  • The GCSC is a great way for you to connect students with a positive experience that builds environmental stewardship.
  • Provides your students a unique hands-on experience that extends their learning outside the classroom.
  • If your schools are not near a coastal shoreline don’t worry, cleanups can take place anywhere land meets water, whether it be on the coast or at a creek, stream, river, pond, wetland, or lake near you.

A joint conservation partnership between WWF-Canada and the Vancouver Aquarium, the GCSC is a national non-profit program that promotes the understanding of shoreline litter issues by engaging Canadians to rehabilitate shoreline areas through cleanups.

Contrary to what many may guess, the North Shore is actually very well-situated to benefit from solar energy and more and more buildings are taking advantage of this technology. In fact, new homes on the North Shore are quickly moving toward a requirement to be ‘solar ready’ when they are built.

There will be hands-on displays you can explore, as well as experts on hand to answer your questions. Homeowners who have installed solar panels can share their experiences with you.

So come out and see what the heat is all about. To register at register@cnv.org

Cheers
David Thomson, on behalf of the Cool North Shore team

Earth Day Around The Corner
2/28/2011 10:05:45 AM

April 22nd will soon be here and with it, a renewed interest in Earth Day. What better way to re-connect your students with the environment than to get them to discover how Earth Day came to be.

Well, it all started with U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson and his desire to put the environment in the limelight and make it an issue of notice to politicians. The Senator got the idea in 1962 of persuading President Kennedy to go on a conservation tour. That tour took place in September 1963 and although it didn’t get the issue onto the national political agenda, it did start the germ of what would eventually become Earth Day. Anti-Vietnam War demonstrations at college campuses across the country gave the Senator the idea of organizing a huge grassroots protest over that was happening to the environment.

In September 1969, Senator Nelson announced that a nationwide grassroots demonstration on behalf of the environment would take place in the spring of 1970. He invited everyone to participate. Once the wire service picked up the story, the response was “electric”.

And thus was the story of Earth day born. The initial response in 1970 brought together some 20 million demonstrators across the country and thousands of schools and communities. Today, Earth Day involves more than one billion people around the world.

The Earth Day Network (www.earthday.org) worked with more 22,000 worldwide partners last year to move climate and other environmental civic actions forward – creating the largest global response ever to climate change. Among some of the accomplishments were:

Over one million students abroad participated in school greenings, from community-wide clean ups to installing solar energy systems to creating school gardens to adopting an environmental curriculum.

A partnership with the Avatar Home Tree Initiative was formed to plant a million trees in 16 countries in 2010.

  • The Earth Day Network and the Peace Corps. worked with local volunteers to implement environmental and civic education programs, tree-plantings, village clean-ups and recycling seminars in some of the most remote, under-served areas of the Earth, including Ukraine, the Philippines, Georgia, Albania and Paraguay.
  • In Kolkata, India, the Earth Day Network partnered with global and local NGOs and local government officials to coordinate city and village clean-ups, environmental rallies and educational programs for underprivileged children.
  • In China, 10 universities participated in month-long efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of their communities, with students making lifestyle changes such as recycling and using public transportation.
  • In Morocco, the government announced an unprecedented National Charter for the Environment and Sustainable Development, the first commitment of its kind in Africa and the Arab world, which will inform new environmental laws for the country. The Kingdom of Morocco also pledged to plant a million trees in 2010.
  • In Afghanistan, Earth Day Network worked with more than 40 government and village leaders across the country on environmental practices, including recycling programs, clean water and alternative energy.
  • On April 22, the President of Mozambique led a country-wide tree-planting initiative in schools in the city of Maputo, while Earth Day Network greened 40 schools globally, launching its international green school program.
  • Earth Day Network partnered with Carbon War Room to convene 200 of the world’s most important entrepreneurs for the Creating Climate Wealth Summit, which examined groundbreaking ways to solve climate change and create a new green economy based on renewable energy.

    Earth Day in Canada

Here in Canada, Earth Day is a much-celebrated event. More than six million Canadians participate in local events and projects to address local environmental issues. And nearly every school child in Canada takes part in an Earth Day activity. In fact, Earth Day has grown into earth Week and even Earth month in order to accommodate the profusion of events and projects. These events include:
  • Victoria’s Earth Walk (5,000 participants);
  • Edmonton’s Earth Day Festival at Hawrelak Park (30,000 participants);
  • Oakville, Ontario’s Waterways Clean-up (2,000 participants); and
  • Thousands of small, private events staged by schools, employee groups and community groups.

Earth Day Canada also has several year-round programs for Canadians of all ages such as: EcoKids; ecoMentors; EcoAction Teams; and Toyota Earth Day Scholarship. Additional initiatives include: a charity auction on eBay, Earth Day Goes to Work, Earth Day Goes to School, the Hometown Hero Award, and the Earth Day Canada Gala.

Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup
2/24/2011 10:23:06 AM

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup (GCSC) presented by Loblaw Companies Limited, is pleased to announce a new learning opportunity for the schools in your district. We have just launched registration for our first ever spring cleanup (May 2011) in addition to our National cleanup in September and have developed an extensive Curriculum Guide to complement the cleanup experience. Please share this announcement with the schools in your district so they can benefit from this new initiative.

The GCSC is a national non-profit conservation program that promotes the understanding of shoreline litter issues by engaging Canadians to rehabilitate shoreline areas through cleanups.

Why participate in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup this May?

The GCSC is a great way for you to connect students with a positive experience that builds environmental stewardship.

Provides your students a unique hands-on experience that extends their learning outside the classroom.

If your schools are not near a coastal shoreline don’t worry, cleanups can take place anywhere land meets water, whether it be on the coast or at a creek, stream, river, pond, wetland, or lake near you.

This year’s Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup - BC Spring School Edition takes place from May 1-31, 2011 and registration is now open at [ http://www.shorelinecleanup.ca ]shorelinecleanup.ca.

How to use the Curriculum Guide

The new Curriculum Guide has been developed to extend the learning experiences of students before and after a shoreline cleanup. It offers lesson plans for Grades K-7 in science, mathematics and social studies – all supporting the Prescribed Learning Outcomes of the BC Ministry of Education’s Integrated Resource Packages (IRPs).

We at the Stanley Park Ecology Society are once again recruiting volunteers for our various spring and summer programs involving youth These include:

Urban Camping:  This is an exciting program which introduces inner city kids to an overnight camping experience in Stanley Park - they are taught basic camping skills such as putting up tents, cooking  meals on camp stoves, survival skills, knot tying and local natural history.  We need several volunteers with good conversational English skills to assist with the afternoon/early evening part of the program.

EcoRangers:  In the summer months, uniformed Eco Rangers work in pairs as roving naturalists in the park, answering visitors' questions about local animals and plants, and providing other important on-the-spot interpretation.

  EARTH FOUNDATION

2010 was a great year for Earth Foundation!
We painted some big walls, met some fantastic people, and even swam with a pod of dolphins off the shore of Lions Bay!

For 2011 Earth Foundation will be working with staff and students of local schools to bring some eco education to the classroom, and with the help of the kids put some paint on the walls. We are very excited to be launching this project at Chaffey Burke Elementary this winter, with close to 600 children painting a 100ft long wall.

As always, we will continue to work with community groups, municipal governments, and graffiti prevention campaigns to beautify the streets and raise awareness for environmental conservation.

Also for 2011 we plan on initiating the first of its kind "living murals".

Trees for Life Canada
10/19/2010 10:33:49 AM

Dear Environmental Educator,

I.C.O.C. Trees for Life Canada is a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to promoting environmental education and providing resources and support to environmental educators. The organization was established in 1991, and has since been delivering the highly acclaimed environmental education program for elementary school children entitled the “Grow-A-Tree” project.

The concept behind the “Grow-A-Tree” project is quite simple; entertain and educate children through riddles, jokes and activities that provide information and knowledge about the role trees play in maintaining the ecological balance of our planet. The program was developed in collaboration with environmental educators and scientists to ensure that the information is scientifically sound, fits the curriculum and is appropriate to the skill level of the specific grades. The “Grow-A-Tree” project is available for each grade level from kindergarten to grade 6, and includes:

• Biodegradable planting cartons for each student
• Tree seeds for each student
• A teacher’s manual with background material and many classroom activities that are both educational and enjoyable
• A workbook for each student, which includes not only instructions on planting the trees seeds, but also grade-appropriate lessons in science and ecology

Attached is an order form for obtaining the “Grow-A-Tree” project kits for your school. Michelle Marcus, 12 (Fun Camps participant 2009)

"My goal in sending Maana to this camp was first to make her aware of environmental concerns of our time and second encourage her to take action and believe that she, as an individual can make a difference and lead others in this direction as well.
