AP Literature and Composition 12

AP English Literature and Composition
Mr. J. Donald

Course Description:

AP English Literature and Composition introduces students to College and University level work in English Literature and Composition and follows the curricular requirements described in the AP English Course Description.  The course begins with the intellectual roots of Western Literature in the Classical period, traces the development of the English language to the present day, and focuses on the study of English Literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the late Twentieth Century.

While the skeleton of the course is a broad survey, the muscle and sinew of the course is made up an examination of the social and historical context of each work and the close textual analyses of specific works of poetry and prose (essays, short stories, drama, and novels) especially from the Sixteenth Century to contemporary times.  As well as extensive reading of representative texts from British and American writers, students will be expected to learn how to write effectively about the literature studied through formal and informal writing assignments in which students will be expected to respond to the literature through: their experience of the work, their interpretation of the work, and their evaluation of the work.

An expectation of the course is that students will learn how to analyze a work of literature, examining not only each work's structure, style, themes, social, and historical context, but also the work's use of elements such as figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone.

Students completing the course will receive credit for AP Literature and Composition 12 and Literature 12.  Students earning an AP Exam mark of 3 or above may receive credit for a full year English course at University (check the guidelines for your University).

AP Literature is a fast-paced, intellectually stimulating introduction to the study of literature at a University level.  Register and become part of the AP experience at Handsworth!

Yours in Literature,
