Great Winter Poetry by Division 10

Ode to Winter

Winter is white

like an icy snowman melting in my garden,

a fluffy snowflake fluttering from the sky,

and a polar bear ice skating on some ice.

By Lana

Ode to Winter

Winter is grey

like creepy fog making it hard to see,

a shirt that keeps you warm,

and hard clouds

By Armin

Ode to Winter

Winter is grey

like a fast wolf looking for food,

a pair of skis carrying me down the mountain,

and the dark sky floating above my house.

Winter is white

like a snowman standing in my yard,

a polar bear getting food in the ocean,

and a rabbit that can camoflauge in the snow.

By Georgia

Ode to Winter

Winter is brown

like a pencil,

hot chocolate sitting on a table,

and a bare tree waving in the air.

Winter is white

like new fallen snow blanketing the ground,

an angel flying on the sky,

and soft snowflakes landing on the ground.

By Tommy

Ode to Winter

Winter is white

like a wet snowman starting to melt,

a fluffy cotton ball removing nail polish,

and the cold wind that blows through the bare trees.

By Caitlin

Ode to Winter

Winter is white

like a sad cloud getting ready for electricity,

a shy snowman melting in the snow,

winter is pink

like a butterfly flying in the sky,

a sun set,

and a valentine’s heart.

By Darya

Ode to Winter

Winter is white

like a shiny snowflake,

a pretty icicle shining in the breezy winter night,

and a small snowman waiting to melt.

By Tuana

Ode to Winter

Winter is white

like a big sparkly icicle dancing from the ceiling,

a round snowball falling from the blue sky,

and a warn snowman that is starting to melt.

By Brandon

Ode to Winter

Winter is black

like a black bear hibernating in a cave,

some black coal burning in the fire,

and a bare tree swinging in the winter.

a fluffy cloud floating in the sky,

and a white snowman building a snow dog.

Happy New Year and welcome back

We hope your holiday was relaxing and that you got to spend time with your families.  Our focus for this term will be: reading with increased fluency and expression, reading non-fiction material (about the Olympics, etc.), reading and responding to poetry, reader's theatre , and reading other children's work and responding to the feelings and moods that it conveys.  In writing, the children will be expected to use the word wall more consistently and to edit their written work, use learned spelling patterns (short vowels, ed, es, ing, s, y endings) correctly, write a proper paragraph with revisions and create different forms of poetry using descriptive language.  They will continue to practice attentive listening and this term will learn how to respond to others to show their attention and interest.  The arts will be the focus of our next IB Unit and more information will be coming home at the end of this week.  Please continue to check your child's planner as there may be more "homework" required during the Olympic Games.  It should be an exciting term and we are looking forward to watching your children make continued progress as they become more balanced, curious, and knowledgeable learners.

 December 2009
Mrs. Donaldson and Mrs. Danieli wish all of our children and their families a wonderful and safe holiday.

November 30th
What a great month of learning November has been!  We have seen tremendous improvement in reading, writing, listening and speaking as well as in questioning and predicting.
The children are learning to transfer word wall words into their daily writing as well as sound out all the letter sounds they hear as they improve their inventive spelling.
Mad Science came in last week and did several great hands-on experiments with the grade two's and the children were on task, respectful and learned a lot about the different states of matter and the changes that take place, and why.  Here are some pictures that were taken of our scientists hard at work.

October 31st

What a great day!  The kids had so much fun and the costumes were fantastic.  I can't believe how respectful and hard working the children were for the entire day.  They performed a Halloween song in front of all the primary children and paraded throughout the school in their costumes. We are looking forward to meeting with all of our  parents next month during our interviews.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We had fun making Stone Soup and talking about acts of kindness today.  We also learned about the Dalai Lama and how they celebrate Thanksgiving (food, celebrations, customs).  Here are some photos of us enjoying our yummy soup.

October/09
Thanks parents, for all your support with our final project on Communities.  The children will be designing the outline of their webs tomorrow and their interviews need to be in by next Tuesday, October 27th.

We will be starting our Star of the Week Program during the first week of November.  Your child will be bringing home a questionnaire for you to help them fill out about themselves.  Please send in any pictures, medals, certificates, etc. that highlight your child's talents or interests.  We love to see pictures of family and friends as well!  The children will present their information/photos, etc. orally and then they will be displayed for a week on a bulletin board.  We will start at the end of the alphabet and work our way up to the beginning by the end of the school year.

We are really happy with the amount, and consistency of home reading this year.  Thanks for reading with your child every night.  Most of the children already have their first shiny star!

A notice is hanging outside of our classroom for you to sign up if (and only if) you are able to send in a goodie for our Halloween celebration on Friday, October 30th.  Please do not feel you have to if you are too busy.  There will be other opportunities for you to help out throughout the year.

Have a safe Halloween!

September/09

Welcome Back Grade Two Families!
The children are settling in nicely to the new rules and routines of their grade 2 classroom.  They are a very caring and attentive class  and we are having fun getting to know each and every one of them.  The past few weeks have been busy listening to them read and doing some spelling and math assessment as well.  All of our programs will be up and running during the first week of October.  It is too much for the children to "take in" if we introduce everything all at once.
Spelling words were taken home for the first time this week and spelling quizzes will always be on Thursdays.  The odd time there may not be a spelling quiz due to a Monday holiday and we will let you know in the planner.  Spelling quizzes are meant to provide the children an opportunity to learn how to study and to help them learn various spelling rules.  They are not meant to be hard and unsuccessful.  Even though the spelling words may seem too easy some weeks and your child may score very well on their quizzes, it's the transferring of these words into their written work that is not always correct and takes lots of practice!

Our home reading program will begin the week of October 4th.  A notice will come home next week explaining it in greater detail.  If you are still unsure of the process, please drop by or call us.

Personal writing, reflective journals and learning logs will be the main type of writing practiced this term.  During writing time, structured writing lessons will focus on sentence formation, punctuation, spelling word wall words correctly, generating ideas for writing and adding descriptive words to writing.

In math, the children will be sorting and patterning, understanding numbers (greater/less than, odd/even, counting forward/backwards, etc.) and will be practicing adding and subtracting number facts (from 10-18, depending on their level of readiness).  If parents wish to practice math at home, adding and subtracting numbers using flash cards or playing card games is a great way to help and keep it interesting.

If we feel your child is struggling in a certain area and if we need extra support from you at home, we will call or put a note in their planner.  Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
