Retiring the 2010 Blog 4/9/2010 10:53:28 AM
It's a wrap!
Thank you to all of the contributors and others who helped create a fantastic platform to celebrate the Vancouver 2010 Olympics!
We've enjoyed bringing you the stories of our connections to the 2010 Olympic Games over the past year, but it's time to turn the page. To do this, the North Vancouver School District's "Connecting with 2010" blog will be retired from our website on April 30, 2010.
Even though "Connecting with 2010" has run its course, we're just warming up to blogging. A brand-new NVSD eco-blog will debut later this spring featuring sustainability initiatives, resources and profiles of environmental education at its best in our school district.
Thanks again everyone, it's been a pleasure blogging with you,
Laurie Martin, Arlene Martin and Ann Gillespie The "Connecting with 2010" editorial team

The Outdoor School was extremely proud to host the 2010 Indigenous Youth Gathering during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Over 16 days, more than 300 First Nations, Inuit and Métis youth, aged 19 to 29, experienced the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be at Canada's Games in person and showcase their culture and region through a range of activities and special events. The programming for the Vancouver 2010 Indigenous Youth Gathering is connected to the pillars of the Olympic Movement: sport, culture, sustainability, as well as the objectives of the Olympic Truce (youth, action, legacy, awareness, and peace).
For a longer report and a slideshow, go to this link.
In addition, the Outdoor School hosted a "hands-on" learning day at the Big House for the Samsung Mobile Explorers - young people that came from as far away as China, Korea, and Russia (and across Canada and the USA) to participate in Canada's games.

Ecole Boundary School celebrated the 2010 Paralympic Games with whole-hearted enthusiasm!
On Monday, March 15th, grade 1 to 7 students attended Paralympic curling at Hillcrest, cheering on the Canadian team as they beat the Japanese in only 7 ends. Some of us even tried our hand at wheelchair curling! Outside the children enjoyed visiting with Sumi, who made sure that she said a special hello to all of our students.
On Tuesday, March 16th, grade 3 to 7 students braved the pouring rain at Whistler Creekside to take part in the Paralympic Alpine competition. Our students watched the hearing and visually impaired GS as well as the sit ski GS. Many thanks to our parent community, volunteers and VANOC for making these events possible!"

NVSD Employees Perform in Paralympic Opening Ceremonies 3/24/2010 12:09:23 PM
On Friday, March 12, four current NVSD employees had the honour to perform in the opening ceremonies for the Paralympic Winter Games.
Bombadier Ross Bligh (Lynnmour), Bombadier Andrew Voth (Ridgeway), Bombadier Genevieve Dunkley (Capilano) and Bombadier Craig Drew (Dorothy Lynas), all members of the Band of the 15th Field Regiment Royal Canadian Artillery, combined musical forces with the Naden Band from Maritime Forces Pacific for this occasion. The combined bands played the opening fanfare (pictured above) and the Paralympic Hymn. The drudgery that goes with 3 1/2 days of long rehearsals instantly evaporated in front of 60,000 screaming fans waving LED pom-poms. The chance to meet athletes in the basement of BC Place was very inspiring. It was a magical evening--we were very fortunate to be a part of it.

On Wednesday, Feb. 3rd students from Blueridge Divisions 1 and 2 played Olympic tourist in their hometown. They skated at the newly reopened Robson Square, and then travelled to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) on the Canada Line.
Students experienced the various changes that occur in a city when an event as large as the Winter Games are staged. They took advantage of the several modes of transportation available to the Olympic visitors. The Canada Line was constructed specifically for the games themselves and now makes Vancouver Canada’s only city with rapid transit train service to its airport.
In all ways the trip was a tremendous success! Well done to all of the students and staff who took part.

Canadian Athletes Results February 4-7 2/11/2010 8:51:19 AM
The weekend before the Olympics was very quiet in terms of of International events as the world's attention turned to Vancouver's Olympics. The Cross-country World Cup/Grand Prix in Canmore Alberta was the only event in which Canadians competed. Sara Renner from Canmore earned a BRONZE medal for the Individual Sprint Classic.
We have seen our schools in North Vancouver and across Canada embrace the spirit and values of our athletes (see stories on the Sharing the Dream site). We wish GOOD LUCK to ALL the Canadian athletes competing in the Olympic and Paralympic Games!

Canadian Sports Centre Pacific (CSCP) has started a conversation about "why medals matter" - to our community, our health, our youth, our country.
The phrase is a metaphor for high performance sport and for why the pursuit of excellence matters. For some it’s not so much about the medal – it’s about inspiring the community, getting people up off the couch or showing kids the great things sport can do in their lives. For others it’s about striving for a goal in life and going on an incredible journey in the pursuit of a dream.
As part of the dialogue, Canadian Sports Centre Pacific interviewed Honourable Mary McNeil, Minister of State for Olympics and ActNow BC, who shares her thoughts during the Canadian Paralympic Committee’s celebration of International Paralympic Day. Click here for the video.
The second video shows an interesting conversation with Richmond’s Alexa Loo about how high performance sport has a trickledown effect in many ways. Click here for the video .

Fighting Climate Change through Project Blue Sky 10/30/2009 11:26:00 AM
Canada's Olympic and Paralympic athletes have teamed up with the Masters of Digital Media students at UBC to creat Project Blue Sky (PBS). The project aims to capture the imagination of individuals with an interest in environmental issues, and have them track and capture their individual carbon reducing activities. PBS hopes to encourage people from around the world to take action to reduce their carbon footprint by registering 1 billion kilometres of carbon offsetting activity between now and the end of the Games.
PBS is inviting schools across British Columbia and Canada to challenge one another to help meet this goal. PBS has developed an easy-to-use online "widget" that records the number of kilometres individuals or groups contribute, and which can be shared across other social networks and web applications.
