In reading this term :
The children are learning the concepts of print. These include knowing the front and back cover of a book, where to find the title, the meaning of author and illustrator, looking at text from the top of the page down and tracking print from left to right, knowing where a story begins and ends.
The most important thing children need to learn at this stage is the alphabet. Just being able to chant the alphabet song does not mean they know the letters. They must be able to identify both upper and lower case letters out of sequence. Some children know this already and others will take all year to learn most of them. We work on this skill all year. Anything you can do at home to help your child learn the letters will be very valuable. There are computer sites like, Starfall, that help children learn letters in a fun way.
In January, we will start associating letters with sounds and begin using invented spelling in journal writing.
This term we are working on rhyming skills, both identifying and generating rhymes.
In late November I will introduce compound words.
Home reading will begin in November.
