For the past two months, Seycove Secondary and the North Vancouver School District’s (NVSD) Information Communication Technology department have undergone a pilot project involving the establishment of a guest wireless network for student use for their personally-owned devices. The new NVSD Guest wireless project is the first step forward in the School District’s investment in wireless technology. The intent is to further enrich our collaborative teaching and learning environment as well as the opportunity to address individualized needs.
Seycove is thrilled to be the first site to pilot this exciting initiative and at the same time recognizes the need to establish general usage guidelines that will apply to personally-owned devices. To that extent a draft of these guidelines has been copied on the reverse of this letter and will be carefully reviewed with the entire student body on February 1st. The guidelines will apply to the use of all laptop computers and other mobile internet devices. The next few months will allow an opportunity to gather feedback as we look ahead to incorporating the terms and conditions into our Communication Systems and Student Conduct policies.
The challenge ahead will be integrating this wireless technology, which represents only one tool in the learning process, as not simply an add-on but rather to seamlessly embed it in our learning environment. I believe the Seycove staff is ready for that challenge.
