We all know how important good literacy skills are – and how hard it is to watch a child struggling with his or her basic reading, especially when they are falling behind their classmates.
This year, we will once again provide our One on One Reading Program. It will provide a level of assistance to many of these children by enlisting the help of parent volunteers as one-on-one reading mentors. We have set up quiet reading spots in a number of locations where a young learner can practice their reading with a trained and screened parent volunteer on a regular basis. Similar programs in Greater Vancouver have shown that this kind of intervention has a huge impact on a child’s reading ability as well as their self esteem.
We are looking forward to seeing the program in action early in the month of October.
