Student Safety
At Queen Mary we take the job of student supervision and security very seriously, and would like to make parents aware of a number of safeguards we have in place to account for and assist all our students throughout the course of the day.
We ask that parent helpers and other visitors to the school during the school day check in at the office. If you are helping out in the school or a class, it is important we know who you are, what you are doing, and that you have completed the necessary volunteer paperwork.
SUPERVISION SCHEDULES: Students are under a teacher’s supervision throughout their time in the classroom during the day. As there is no supervision before 8:50 am or after 2:45 pm, we ask that students stay out of the school before and after these times, UNLESS they are participating in teacher directed activities, eg. band, athletics, training programs, etc. At recess and lunch we have 9-10 adults on the front and back fields supervising students. Most are in radio contact with the main office, and Principal or Vice Principal. Students are expected to assist by following our supervisor’s directions, and asking for assistance from our supervisors if any problems arise.
OUT of BOUNDS: ALL students are expected to follow our playground guidelines during recess and lunch. These guidelines include following the directions of our supervisors, and staying away from all Out of Bounds areas. These OB areas are unsupervised: staff parking lot, all roadways, the west side of the school beyond the gravel field, and the east side of the school beyond the grassy area.
INSIDE AND OUTSIDE DAYS: All students are expected to be outside every day at recess unless they are excused for health reasons by a note from home. PLEASE Dress for the weather. In cases of very wet weather, students will be advised they can stay inside in their classrooms if they are playing and working quietly.
GRADE 7 CLASSROOM MONITORS: Grade 7 students monitor in primary classrooms from 12:00 to 12:15 pm. The grade 7’s will monitor the behaviour of the younger students and assist the students in completing their lunches in a timely manner.
DISMISSAL: All Kindergarten students will be dismissed directly to a parent or other guardian. Students in grade 1-7 will be dismissed from their classrooms, so parents are advised to identify a pre-arranged meeting spot with their children in these grades if they are being picked up.
CROSSING GUARD: Our crossing guard, Debbie Lutz, monitors the crosswalk at Keith Rd and Mahon at the North side of the school, and we ask that al students and parents follow her direction when crossing the road.
