Grade Seven architects constructed a "Dickens Wall" in preparation for end of term festivities surrounding our study of A Christmas Carol. This is part of a Victorian England theme wherein we discuss the politics, class structure and living conditions of the era. We then transform an entire wall with a winter street scene from 19th Century London. A "Marley's Ghost" knocker goes up on our door, we hang evergreen boughs and decorate with holly. The students become characters from the Dickens era (usually choosing to be street urchins, pickpockets, "Mudlarks", chimney sweeps, crossing sweepers or aristocrats) and then write detailed diaries of their lives. These journals must include a minimum of six entries from the course of the year, at least two of which should be from the holiday season, December 20th - January 1st. On the last day of the term we have a traditional Dickens buffet, after which each character (dressed in costume if possible), presents extracts from his or her diary. Victorian parlour games round out the festivities.
