It is our goal at Highlands to have students grow into self-directed, self-reliant, self-disciplined, responsible persons. In order to accomplish this goal it is necessary for students to be given the freedom to make choices and decisions that affect their own behavior and progress within the Highlands Code of Conduct.

There are, however, some limitations set by School Law, by general safety practices, and by reason of proper health standards that must be adhered to by all students. These are as follows:

• After arriving at school in the morning, students must receive permission to leave prior to dismissal time.
• Students may use the student telephone to contact parents during recess, lunch and after school.
• Students should not loiter or play in the School Parking Lot or play outside the school fences.
• Due to many problems caused by its improper disposal, gum may not be chewed at school.
• Bicycles should be placed in racks and locked during school hours.
• Although appropriate for outside, hats are not to be worn in classrooms.

Morning Routines (8:50 am)

• All students are encouraged to arrive at school between 8:40 and the entry bell time at 8:45 a.m. (Exceptions include such activities as band, athletic practices or an appointment with a teacher).
• Students who have arranged to work with their teacher may come in at the agreed upon time, while under the teacher's direct supervision.
• Our school office is open from 8:30 to 4:00 Monday to Friday.
• Parents should be aware that there is no morning supervision before 8:55 a.m. There is no adult supervision of students on the playground prior to the start of school. Parents are advised not to send their children to school early unless they are participating in an extracurricular activity.

Recess Routines (10:20-10:40 am)

• All students are encouraged to use the washrooms and then to go outside. On rainy days students will use the undercover play area.
• Teacher aides supervise the outdoor play areas at this time.
• The computer room and library are not open during recess.

Lunch Routines (12:05-12:55 pm)

• All students are encouraged to go home for lunch whenever possible.
• Primary students will eat in their classrooms. They will be dismissed at 12:20 by a school bell.
• Students always can have more time to finish their lunch.
• After finishing their lunch, they must go outside unless it has been declared over the P.A. as an "Inside Day."
• Teacher aides supervise the classrooms from 12:05-12:20 p.m. and the outdoor play areas from 12:20-12:55 p.m. Instruction commences at 1:00.
• Intermediate students will eat lunch in their classrooms. They must go outside after finishing their lunch and being dismissed by the school bell, unless it has been declared over the P.A. as an "Inside Day."
• Eating lunch at school is a privilege, and we expect our students to display appropriate behavior. Those pupils staying for lunch must NOT leave the school grounds unless they have written permission from their parents.

After School Routines (3:00 pm)

• All students are expected to go home promptly at 3:00 p.m.
• Some students may have after school homework directed by the classroom teacher.
• The school has no supervision of students after 3:00 unless at a school sponsored event.
