Students Write With Passion!

from Sarah, Gr 7
The Case of the Missing Photo Album
  (KidLit 2008)

I don't know how much more of reading silently in the dusty library
I can take.
My friends pass the time by shooting spit-balls at each other
and I don't join in.
After one hit me in the eye two weeks ago, I vowed
to never participate in a
spit-ball war again.
Time passes slowly, and I manage to get that piece of lettuce from
lunch
out of my back molars. Just as I'm about to declare this torture
will never
end, the bell rings.  What a coincidence. And now, I'm off to
go have a lovely
secret meeting with an anonymous thug.

from Aadishri, Gr 7  (2008)
Alliteration Poem

One woolly, wombat, willingly waddled in a weird way.
Two tangy, tapping, tambourines talked tiredly.
Three thumping things thought how to thunder towards the throat.
Four fragile, frogs fought in a fort.

 from April, Gr 4 (2008)
Dreams Never End, poem

Dreams never end
up or
down
even when you're twirling
round
and round.
Dreams never end
night or
day
even when children
want to play.

Evacuation, novella

Chloe's face was streamed with hot tears, and they cascaded
down her red cheeks, nose and chin to drip onto the emerald
grass.  There was no blood, so I didn't understand what was
wrong.  Then I saw a little silver bracelet glint in the sunlight
around Jenny's wrist.

 from Kristina, Gr 3 (2008)
Jet Packs and Puffles,  sci fi story

"Sparky no!" cried Spin 7 when she got to the Beacon.
But it was too late.  Sparky was flying a Jet Pack! So, Spin 7
grabbed a Jet Pack and some fuel and flew after Sparky.
It was easy to catch up with Sparky.  That was what she
was afraid of.  Sparky could fall any minute now! So, Spin 7
went under Sparky in case he fell.  Then she saw something
red and fluffy.
"Could it really be Rockhopper?" thought Spin 7.  Next
she saw a telescope.  "Yes, it is!" yelled Spin 7.  So she
grabbed Sparky, put in some new fuel and flew at top
speed, and soon she was on the Migrator!

from Lynn, Gr 6 (2009)
Over the Edge, self help book

Empathy is a but not a sense.  A sixth sense.  Not seeing
dead people or having the ability to fly but seeing
someone's thoughts and having the ability to sense
people's feelings.  You could get a vibe that someone is
sad or happy.  Anything they're feeling you need no
words, you just know.  You could agree or not to
what they are thinking, but we'll get to thinking grey later.

 from Nadia, Gr 7 (2008)
Graduation, poem

of all the times that were muddy
and all the twists and turns and bends
but what I think of most of all
is when I graduate from school
I shall stay strong and stand tall
and not act like a fool
we all know it is hard
to leave the ones we love
and all the bonds that we share
