Below are our featured authors that have visited Cleveland School recently.  All four local authors have friend or family connections to our school community. We are grateful for their inspiration.

2009 Events
Maxwell Newhouse with The House That Max Built (Gr 3s)
Rick Riordan of The Percy Jackson series
(Contest winners: Emily C, Jodie N., Brendan C.)
Tim Wynne Jones of the Rex Zero series (Div F01 at Capilano Library)

2008 Events
  Shannon Stewart
Several families have connections to Shannon.
Shannon was first invited to our school as Poet-In-Residence.  We had great fun playing with words in class.  She is the author of two children's books.  Alpha Bad offers a hilarious perspective on the alphabet.  For example, "K is for kooky.  A kingdom of kooky kids is called a Kindergarten."  The Sea Crow is about a girl facing her fears about going to a new school.    (Thank you Maya, Gr 8)

Chris Mizzoni

Matthew, Gr 8 and Garnet, Gr 5 connected us to Chris.
Chris' presentation was very exciting because he showed us how animation works and how his book was created. We liked how he made the characters from drawing them on the computer.  The main character, Clancy is a great hockey player, but he's very full of himself and shows off a lot and forgets to play the game. Chris has Wayne Gretsky's rookie hockey card that's worth a lot of money! (Aidan, Gr 2, Kristina, Gr 3)

Barb Nickel

Maeve, Gr 6 and Hugh, Gr 4 connected us to Barb.
Barbara has written two award winning books, both historical fiction.  Hannah Waters is about a girl in the 1800's as well as one in 2008 in which they know of each other's existence.  In her books we learn how things have changed, but how human emotions, even over time, don't change at all.
The front cover shows a violin.  Barbara played for us with hers which is over 200 years old and worth probably $10 000(Carly, Gr 6)
  Lyn Hancock
Aidan, Gr 7 and Liam, Gr 5 connected us wtih Lyn.
Lyn had many stories to tell about her adventures with orphaned animals.  She had her marriage proposal in an eagle's nest!  Tabasco was the story that made everyone very curious because she would take the mischievous raccoon with her everywhere.  She even hid him in her travel bag on an airplane!
