Evaluating Web sites:
Introduction

Is the Internet a solid source of information? Absolutely! It’s great to have access to thousands of perspectives, constantly breaking news and information that is both visually entertaining and informative.

You will have little trouble gathering information from the web. In fact, you will be flooded with it. Selecting the "best stuff" is going to be the real challenge.

It is important to understand that the quality varies greatly. The Internet has no "filter" for quality, taste or reliability. No editorial board determines the publication of material. Anyone can publish anything on the Internet.

Peter Steiner said it best in his famous
cartoon published in the New Yorker (July 5, 1993).

When you are evaluating a web page ask yourself:
Who is responsible for the page you are accessing?
Is it a governmental agency or an other official source?
A university?
A business, corporation or other commercial interest?
An individual?
You can generally rely on .edu, .gov. and .mil domains (hostnames) to present accurate information.
The .com, .net and .org are more uncertain and might require additional verification
