For a student to earn an IB Diploma, he or she can amass a maximum of 45 points. Each of the six groups of the IB Hexagon is graded according to the following scale, and a grade out of 42 is assessed for the academic subjects.

The final three points are obtained from the core components of the DP. The Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge course are jointly graded to a maximum of 3 points; in addition, students must successfully complete CAS requirements. Diploma candidates add their points from the six subjects together with any additional points obtained from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge.

Students require a minimum of 24 points to obtain a Diploma and must not score a 1 or 2 in any Higher Level subject. Any grade below a 4 must be balanced by another grade above a 4 at the same level. A score of 30 or above is considered “good.” Scores of 35 or higher are considered “excellent.” A perfect diploma score is 45 points. Students who do not meet the requirements to earn the IB Diploma will earn IB Certificates for their successful completion of each IB course.
