PEER TUTORING 11 PEER TUTORING 12
Peer Tutoring is a locally developed four-credit course for students in grades 10, 11 and 12 who wish to help grade 8 or 9 students in their academic subjects. Each tutor will work either in the LAC or directly in a classroom supporting a junior student. Tutors will be given training to better understand the needs of students with learning difficulties, to help students develop organizational skills and to support students in learning to use effective study skills to improve success in academic classes. Tutors must have demonstrated good attendance, a positive sense of responsibility and must be caring, sensitive and reliable. As tutors, students will have the opportunity to develop many of their own skills such as communication, leadership, organization, interpersonal, oral, writing and decision-making skills. (a great addition to any resume!) Supplemental Fee: None Prerequisite: A responsible student
PHYSICAL EDUCATION SPORTS LEADERSHIP 11 PHYSICAL EDUCATION SPORTS LEADERSHIP 12
PE Sport Leadership 11 will place students in leadership roles, working with the grade 7 PE teachers and students at elementary schools. Students will be placed in “Student Groups”, which will be comprised of students possessing superior leadership skills, and an above average knowledge of the core sports covered: soccer, football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling and rugby. Secondary school students will teach these sports to elementary students, under the supervision of the Secondary PE teacher and the elementary school teacher. At the conclusion of each unit, the feeder schools will come to the Secondary school for a jamboree/tournament of the sport offered. Supplemental Fee: $35.00 Prerequisite: Recommendation of the student’s grade 10 PE teacher. The demonstration of leadership skills and the ability to work with others is essential. Minimum 80% in previous PE course.
GLOBAL INITIATIVES
The Global Initiatives course is a new course for those who want to make a difference in the world. The course will be taught once a week after school and culminate with a work/study experience where we will participate in a building project and engage with the local population in a developing country. This is a unique learning and traveling experience. This is a multi-disciplinary course, meaning, many subject areas will be covered such as Beginner Spanish, house construction techniques, leadership development, as well as learning about the culture, history, geography and politics of the country that we will be visiting. Students will be partnering with students from Seycove Secondary for some weekend projects throughout the year. For more information, please contact Mr. Rob Olson at Rolson@nvsd44.bc.ca.
