Grade 8-10
English as a Second Language
ESL is an elective course limited to those students needing extra time in small classes to support their learning of English. Recommended for level, 1, 2 or 3 speakers. In these classes, students work to develop their skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The objective of these classes is to sufficiently improve students' English to allow them to move to a full, regular programme of courses. Teachers will evaluate and report on their development in a variety of ways including anecdotal reports, letter grades, and parent interviews as appropriate for each student.


ESL Social Studies Beginners 8/9/10
This course is designed for lower level ESL students who will be introduced to the history of Canada and Canadian culture. Recommended for level 1, 2, or 3 speakers. Through the study of Canada, students will continue to enhance their English in all four areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening, as will as learn important study skills that will enable them to move into regular Social Studies. This is a non credit course with no assigned percentage.


ESL Social Studies Advanced / Canadian Culture 8, 9, or 10
This course introduces ESL students to the culture of modern day British Columbia. Recommended for level 3, 4 or 5 speakers. ESL students will study the beliefs, expectations, and values of British Columbians. ESL students will broaden and deepen their knowledge of the four essential English skills areas necessary for active citizenship: reading, writing, speaking, and listening as they examine the local culture. This is a credit course with an assigned percentage.

Language Strategies 10
This course is designed to facilitate the transition of ESL students to English 10 by extending the language strategies and skills in the four main language areas of speaking, listening, reading and viewing, writing and representing. The course focuses on providing students with opportunities to acquire and practice the strategies necessary for successful communication across the curriculum. It is highly recommended that students have attained at least a level 4 ESL standing before attempting this course. This is a credit course with an assigned percentage.

Grade 11-12


English as a Second Language 11/12
This course is designed for beginning ESL students (level 1 & 2) who need more support in acquiring listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Students work toward developing communication skills required for academic success.


ESL Socials & Science 11/12
This course is designed to help prepare level 1 and 2 students to succeed in regular social and science courses. Students study the content vocabulary, background knowledge, and academic skills required for these courses. Students will continue to focus on the improvement of their communication skills in english.


Advanced English Language Strategies 11/12
This course is designed to enable indirect ESL students to extend and advance their use of strategies and skills in the four main areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It focuses on extending and advancing the strategies needed to communicate across all curricula.

New Beginnings 11
This course is for new international students to Carson Graham. The curriculum aims to better prepare students for their transition to a new learning and cultural environment. The culminating project is a portfolio presentation of their first year in Canada.
