COURSES
Grade 8-10
Drama 8
Drama 8 is an introduction to drama and theatre as a performing art with an emphasis on acting. Student should be
aware that success in the class is largely determined by unreserved participation. Beginning skills related to stage
awareness and acting will be engaged through the practical activities found in theatre games and improvisation.
Scene study and script creation will be a feature of the course. Students can expect to gain confidence sharing their
voice and thoughts publicly, in a safe and fun environment.
Drama 9
The cultural significance of theatre will be explored in this class with a central theme of personal development for
the student. The work of an actor, in role creation and character development, will be used to investigate themes
found in written materials. Students will gain skills in stage awareness and character development through activities
and readings. Experiences will include acting genres, theatre sports, Canadian playwrights, scene study, scene writing
and directing.
Theatre Production 10
This class continues the exploration of theatre arts in performance and production. In this combined art and tech
elective, students will be able to describe, manipulate, and design the conventions of theatre in order to build or
enhance themes found in the script. Students will actively participate in exercises to develop stage awareness and
character development. Students will also explore the design of set, lighting, sound, costume , makeup, and stage
management. Enrolled students must be prepared to engage in roles both onstage and offstage. Extracurricular time
should be expected relating to production dates.
Musical Theatre 10
Musical Theatre is a yearlong course. Classes will be offered outside the timetable (as determined by instructor and
students) with additional rehearsals required. Students must be in Grade 10 to register. Preference in
registration will be given to those who have not taken the course previously. The students will be studying
four major areas of musical theatre: voice production, dancing, acting, and technical production. The students will
participate in preproduction, rehearsals, performances and postproduction while also studying technical skills of the
theatre for a specific musical.
