Spring Gala Planning - Input required

CAPILANO ELEMENTARY

SPRING FUNDRAISERS- PAST & PRESENT

At our recent CPAC meeting many parents expressed interest in learning more about the history of our Spring Fundraising Gala. Here is a synopsis of our Spring Fundraising events over the past 3 years.

Background: The idea came up a little over 3 years ago that it would be great if Capilano could have

a state of the art computer lab . Our computers at that time were getting old and dysfunctional and acquiring new computers was seen as a project that was worthwhile exploringas a PAC.

At the time, the North Vancouver School Board was in the process of phasing out loan agreements with schools where up to $30,000 could be borrowed from the School Board interest free. The last year to take advantage of this “plan” was upon us and we had to make a fast decision. Thus the idea of the Spring Fundraiser was born.

We have to admit that we went out on a limb to buy first and pay later! The total cost of the computer lab was approximately $44,000 and we decided to have a Spring Gala Fundraiser until we could retire our loan obligation with the School Board.

The Spring Gala is an adult-only affair held at the school with a silent auction, cash bar, food, and dancing. It is a great evening out for parents to celebrate our amazing school community and get to know each other better!

In Spring 2007 we held “CASINO ROYALE” and raised

$10,000 to go towards our new computer lab.

In Spring 2008 we held “CLUB TROPICANA” (80’s Theme) and raised

$20,000 to go towards our computer lab.

The above two fundraisers, in conjunction with parent donations, meant that after two Spring Galas we had paid for our computer lab and retired our loan with the School Board in June 2009 (two years ahead of schedule). This is a pretty amazing accomplishment. After the success of our first two Spring Galas and due to parent demand for another, we decided to keep the momentum going and hold a third.

In Spring 2009 we held “PARTY OF THE CENTURY” as a theme to recognize Capilano Elementary’s 100

th Anniversary. We raised $26,000 and used the money to upgrade our tennis courts and buy ten “Mac Books”, laptop computers that can be signed out by students to use in classrooms and around the school.

Now the 2009/2010 school year is upon us and we would like to keep the momentum going with another amazing Spring Fundraiser! In order to get the ball rolling we have to do three things:

- establish a fundraising goal

- have parent volunteers committed to our various gala committees

- come up with a theme for another glamorous Spring Gala.

We need your help! If you have ideas or are ready to become involved, please contact a member of the CPAC Executive. We would love to hear from you.
