International Baccalaureate - Primary Years Programme Information

Capilano Elementary School was selected in March 2008 by the North Vancouver School Board to start the application process to become an International Baccalaureate World School.

Capilano Elementary School is a candidate school* for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). As a potential IB World School, Capilano would be uniting with all other IB World Schools under a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that we believe is important for our students.

*Only schools authorized by the International Baccalaureate (IB) as IB World Schools can offer any of its three academic programmes: the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), or the IB Diploma Programme. Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted. For further information about the IB and its programmes, visit http://www.ibo.org.

What is the IB Primary Years Programme?
The IB Primary Years Programme is a transdisciplinary, inquiry-based framework for curriculum and instruction that encourages international mindedness and fosters life-long learning. It is designed to incorporate the Provincial curriculum through six globally significant themes, via “Units of Inquiry” that teachers create to allow for in-depth investigations into locally relevant and globally significant issues.

What are the IB PYP Transdisciplinary Themes?
The IB PYP themes are:

Who we are

Where we are in place and time

      How we express ourselves

How the world works

     How we organize ourselves

Sharing the planet

The IB PYP Transdisciplinary themes are taught through the traditional subjects: Math, Language, Social Studies, Arts, Science and Technology, and Personal, Social and Physical Education. The subjects often interrelated and combine the five essential elements of Knowledge, Concepts, Skills, Attitudes and Action. This inclusive, enriched program ensures students are challenged to think and question critically. Research skills and sophistication in writing and presenting are significant outcomes of the program.

"The PYP draws on research and best practice from a range of national systems with a wealth of knowledge and experience from international schools to create a relevant, engaging, challenging and significant educational framework for all children.”  http://www.ibo.org/pyp/index.cfm

“The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.”
(IBO, 2007, Making the PYP Happen: A curriculum framework for international primary education, p. 4)

Over the next few years, Capilano students will develop new attitudes and skills towards learning. IB fosters a positive attitude to learning by encouraging students to ask challenging questions, to critically reflect, to develop research skills, and to learn how to learn—essential for life in the 21st century!
