Counselling is a support service for students,teachers, parents, and the community. Your counsellor can provide personal, career, and family counselling and consultation. Counselling is designed to do the following:
- help students to understand and deal with personal and social matters
- help students with decisions about education and careers
- help students improve their success in school
- provide a liaison for the student between teachers, administrators, and parents
- act as a communication link between school and home
- provide some support and direction during family conflict
- provide a referral service for students to specialized resources in the school or community
Special Programs
The counselling department organizes special units and programs at each grade level. The topics include the following:
- study skills
- orientation to the school
- RCMP liaison
- drug and alcohol awareness
- career education
- drinking and driving
- young offenders
The counselling department is also responsible for working with students on a number of issues that are important to youth:
- human sexuality and the reproductive system
- self-esteem
- communication
- STD awareness
- peer relationships
- family relationships
- decision-making
This program is taught primarily by the counselling department and the school in conjunction with the regular classroom teacher.
