7 Student Empowerment

Student Empowerment is a vast area encompassing many facets of school life, but Student Empowerment is primarily concerned with giving students a voice in the decisions that affect their lives.

Some examples of Student Empowerment are:

  • Restorative Action, a formal process, in which students mediate with other students to solve problems and restore relationships caused through conflicts
  • Peer Counselling, a training program where groups of socially conscious students in several secondary schools take formal training in how help their peers.
  • Peer Mediation, an elementary program for senior elementary children designed to foster positive role models and problem solvers on the playground.
  • Student Leadership Council, a forum with representatives from each secondary school where social action and student issues are voiced and acted on.
  • Democratic Classroom Meetings where students and teachers meet regularly to problem solve and formulate rules for the classroom.
