6 Intervention Strategies and Behaviour Management

Intervention Strategies and Behaviour Management is an aspect of Safe and Caring Schools. This aspect refers to graduated consequences and progressive discipline practices in response to student misconduct. From the perspective of Intervention Strategies and Behaviour Management, student infractions are seen as opportunities to learn. The ultimate goal of discipline is to support the student while protecting the community. It is hoped students will to return to their community strengthened by their experience. Evidence of this aspect in schools might be:

  • a restorative action or restorative justice program
  • student behaviour contracts
  • in-school suspensions
  • referrals to alternative programs such as the Social Responsibility Support Program or Keith Lynn Alternative Secondary School.
  • referral to the drug education program, Constructive Alternatives to Teen Suspension
  • supervised unstructured time
  • additional in class behaviour support in the form of aides or behaviour and learning consultants.
  • involvement of RCMP  Youth Intervention Unit Officers
  • co-ordination with the Ministry of Children and Family Development services
  • consultation with, and access to, multi-cultural settlement workers and social workers
  • co-operation and consultation with First Nations communities.
