Design Elements and Principles

The information and activities included in this section reinforce the understanding of the design elements and principles, enabling students to learn how visual design improves problem-solving skills.

 The design elements include:
•    Line
•    Shape
•    Texture
•    Colour and Value
•    Type
The design principles include:
•    Space
•    Balance
•    Emphasis and Flow
•    Repetition and Rhythm
•    Unity

From producing a poster or creating a website, students should understand and reflect on the importance of these elements and principles and the role they play in solving a communication problem.

Posters of the design elements and principles are available on the CD.
