Gifted Programming

Box City - Grade 4

North Vancouver District provides service to gifted students in both Elementary and Secondary schools.

Policy Goal:

  • To identify, in a consistent manner, students who demonstrate or show potential for exceptional cognitive abilities - intellectual, creative or academic performance.
  • To foster self-worth and dignity of gifted students.
  • To assist the gifted students and their parents in understanding and addressing giftedness.
  • To equip gifted students with the processes needed to become lifelong autonomous learners.
  • To provide a range of programming options for individual students within and beyond the regular curriculum.
  • To structure peer group opportunities for gifted learners.
  • To develop and devise efficient access to district, school and community resources in order to meet the needs of gifted students.

Elementary Programming
The goal of gifted programming is to provide:

  • opportunities for students to meet with gifted peers.
  • classroom differentiation of curriculum to meet individual needs.
  • enrichment through Challenge Centres and Zone Explorations (pull-out programs).

There are three components to gifted programming at the elementary level:

Individual Education Plans

The Ministry of Education requires that a student who is designated gifted have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) written. This document highlights student's strengths, needs and goals. The IEP details differentiated learning opportunities provided for the student in the classroom and records participation in any district programs available throughout the year. It is a collaborative document between teacher, student and parent and is considered a 'work-in-progress' as it changes to meet the changing needs of the student.

Zone Explorations

This is a pull-out program that offers enrichment to gifted students (you may also refer to the Zone Explorations link for further details). The district has two zones: East and West. Grade 4 students attend three 8 week sessions. These students attend a workshop for half of the day. Grade 5 and 6 students attend a half-day per week class for one ten week session. The focus is to provide opportunity for social and academic ties with like-minded peers.  For more information on Zone Explorations, click here or see the Zone Exploration pages under the Intermediate Gifted Program.

District Challenge Centres

These are classes held in a variety of locations throughout the district. There is a specific focus for each course and students looking to be challenged in their areas of strength and interest are encouraged to register. Classes are limited in size and duration; therefore, students wishing to participate must be clearly focused. Referrals for registration are in consultation with the student, teacher and parents.
