Policy 208 - Summer Programs

Revised: September 25, 2001

Policy

The Board authorizes the operation of educational programs during the summer months of July and August.

For some students it is advantageous to continue learning during the summer months. For instance, some students require extra time to complete course work, while others may need to build skills for future learning. Still others seek alternative scheduling to suit their individual learning plans. In some cases, enrichment activities for gifted students may offer a suitable challenge to those students who respond favourably to educational opportunities during the summer months.

Summer educational programs should address a wide variety of needs. As a minimum, students should be provided with opportunities to complete academic courses, to receive remedial assistance, to participate in general interest activities, or to partake in enrichment classes which enhance the regular curriculum.

Every effort should be made to ensure that the quality of instructional programs in the summer months is of a similar standard to those offered during the regular school year.

Administrative Procedures

Administrative Supervision

The supervising administrator for summer programs is the Director of Programs and Extension Services or designate. The program administrator shall act in the capacity of a principal and shall have the authority of a principal appointed under the School Act. When required, other administrative personnel may be appointed to assist the program administrator with supervision of summer programs.

The program administrator shall prepare an annual report that should contain relevant information regarding summer programs. Such pertinent information will include a summary of course offerings, enrollment statistics, a statement of revenues and expenditures, and any recommendations from the program administrator or advisory committee.

Advisory Committee

The Superintendent may appoint an advisory committee to consult with the program administrator regarding the operation of summer programs. Membership of the advisory committee should consist of an elementary and a secondary administrative officer and two representative teachers.

Teaching Personnel

The duties of teachers appointed to teach summer programs shall be as defined in the School Act and the relevant provisions of the collective agreement between the Board and the North Vancouver Teachers’ Association shall apply.
